The University of the Incarnate Word Theatre Department opens their fall season with The Nina Variations by Steven Dietz. The play runs for two weekends: Oct. 3-5 and Oct. 9-11.
A beautiful love story centered around two star-crossed lovers who are intensely passionate about each other and their work. The Nina Variations is a full-length play, and a different take on Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull. With only two actors performing the whole time, the leads, Nina (Kyara Cabrera Meneses, Senior) and Treplev (Owen English, Sophomore) are both struggling artists, Nina an actress and Treplev a writer.
This is not a traditional play experience; the actors have been hard at work since May to prepare for the 43 different “Variations” they will perform. The play is compiled of different scenes, set at different points in the character’s lives.
“It shows the very essence of human nature”, sophomore Owen English said.
The actors aren’t the only ones who have been honing their craft. The production and design teams have had meetings throughout the summer to create a beautiful and immersive world for the audience. Director Liz Fisher has been taking this play head on to ensure that the spectators understand the true meaning and beauty behind the work of Steven Dietz.
“Steven Dietz takes one of my favorite plays, Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, and reimagines the relationship between Nina and Treplev”, Director Liz Fisher said.
With opening weekend fast approaching, the department is cracking down on the details and preparing an atmosphere that will hopefully capture the audience and bring them into the world of vibrant love.
There will be an ASL night on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and a Talkback performance, where the audience can ask questions of the actors and production team, on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. The production is free for ALL students and faculty with the use of the code UIWS at check-out. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to support local theatre in San Antonio and enjoy a night out.
