The San Antonio Museum of Art is inviting college students from all over the city to experience art in a new way with its first ever College Night. The event takes place from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Located near the 15 mile Riverwalk, the event is free for students, faculty and staff from participating institutions, including the University of the Incarnate Word, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Trinity University, Texas A&M University-San Antonio and the Alamo Colleges District.
Everyone in attendance will have access to the entire museum, along with themed tours, music, artmaking activities and food and drinks available for purchase. College Night is designed to make the museum more accessible and engaging for students who may not typically visit or have never been.
Membership manager Alana Zamora says the event is especially aimed at introducing new audiences to what the museum has to offer.
“College Night is a great opportunity for students who may not have been exposed to the museum before to come see what we’re all about,” Zamora said. “They can learn more about art, history, and culture as it relates to the world.”
Zamora emphasized the museum’s collection on a global scale, noting that it spans “art from six continents and over 5,000 years of history,” giving students a broad cultural perspective in one place.
Students are encouraged to think about how the experience connects to their academic and personal growth.
“We encourage students to come explore museums and use this opportunity to focus on how their coursework relates to the world itself,” she said. “It’s about making those connections and gaining a broader perspective of history and self-expression.”
As this is the first event of its kind, College Night represents an effort to build stronger connections with the local college community and create a space where students can engage with art in a more social and interactive setting.
In addition to exploring exhibitions such as:
- New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations
- Canvas to Clay: Georgia O’Keeffe & Maria Martinez to Mata Ortiz and Tonalá
- Readymade Remix: New Approaches to Familiar Objects
- Maya Blue: Ancient Color, New Visions
Students can participate in themed tours such as Bricks & Beer (Architecture/SAMA), The Swifties Guide to SAMA and When Gods Get Humbled (which focuses on Greek and Roman mythology).
With free admission and a wide range of activities, College Night offers UIW students and others across San Antonio a unique opportunity to explore one of the city’s leading cultural institutions, and have a fun night full of art, history and self-expression.
