Listening First: Why We’re Running for SGA

By: Eli Cohen and Theresa Servin

The Logos has reached out to current Student Government President Tyler Simmons and Vice President Alexandra Monse Elizondo with an invitation to publish their own article. We will post as soon as it’s received by the Logos.

Student Government exists for one reason: to represent the voices of students. For us, that belief is what inspired our decision to run for President and Vice President of the Student Government Association.

As Communication Arts majors, we have spent much of our time at the University of the Incarnate Word studying how communication shapes organizations and communities. We have learned that when people feel heard, trust grows, ideas improve, and communities become stronger. That belief is at the center of our campaign.

During our time at UIW, we have both had the opportunity to serve and connect with students in different ways. Through these experiences, we have listened to classmates, organizations and fellow Cardinals talk about what matters to them. That took the form of having clearer communication about campus decisions, stronger representation within student leadership and even simply knowing that their concerns are acknowledged and addressed.

These conversations are another big piece of what motivated us to run.

Our goal is simple: to strengthen the connection between students, student government and university leadership. We want to help ensure that students feel informed about what is happening on campus, represented in the conversations that affect them and confident that their voices matter.

We believe that effective student leadership begins with listening. It means asking questions, encouraging participation and creating an environment where every student feels comfortable sharing their perspective.

UIW is a community built on relationships, service and shared purpose. If elected, we hope to continue building that community by focusing on communication, representation and collaboration across campus.

Most importantly, we want students to know that Student Government belongs to them. Our role is simply to serve, listen and help ensure that every Cardinal has a voice in shaping the future of our university.
