Ongoing elevator issues and campus safety concerns have sparked important conversations at the University of the Incarnate Word, and now UPD is weighing in with updates, tips, and resources to help students stay informed and protected.

Although UIW remains a relatively safe campus, elevator entrapments have been an ongoing concern over the past year, with some buildings experiencing multiple incidents. The University Police Department says they’ve been working closely with Facilities to improve safety procedures, while also streamlining how students receive alerts.

“This semester we’ve streamlined our emergency alert system to ensure faster, clearer communication,” said Chief John Catts. “We’ve also worked closely with Facilities to improve elevator safety procedures.”

In addition to these improvements, UPD continues to monitor safety trends on and around campus. This semester, the most frequent calls involve individuals experiencing homelessness who occasionally blend in with the campus community.

“These individuals sometimes blend in with the community and are generally not noticed until they approach others for food or financial help,” Chief Catts explained. “Our officers respond compassionately while keeping everyone’s safety in mind.”

Another pattern UPD has observed is preventable property loss, such as laptops, bags, and bikes being left unattended. Students are encouraged to stay mindful of their belongings and take a few extra seconds to secure them.

To further support campus safety, UPD offers several resources, including Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (C.R.A.S.E.) training and a partnership with Texas Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit overseen by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“We’re one of the only campuses in Texas formally partnered with Texas Crime Stoppers,” Catts said. “This allows our community to report tips anonymously and safely, which helps prevent and solve crimes while protecting the identity of those who report.”

Students can call or text tips to (210) 990-3348 and are encouraged to download the RAVE UIW Safety App, stay in communication with family and roommates, and always report anything that feels off.

“Our mission goes far beyond enforcement — we’re here to serve and protect our entire community,” Catts said. “We rely on partnership and communication. If you see something that doesn’t seem right, say something.”

As UIW continues to grow and adapt, Chief Catts emphasized that the university is committed to being proactive and student-focused. From upgraded systems to in-person training, the department wants students to feel confident that their safety is a top priority.

“We’ve reviewed clips from past years as part of our process and there are definitely things we wouldn’t do today,” Catts said. “We’re always mindful of the times we’re in, and we approach every safety effort with care.”
