An alert on exposures in Central Texas was issued to students at the University of the Incarnate Word after a visitor from Gaines County tested positive for the measles virus.
The individual who tested positive traveled to major tourist destinations and highly populated areas in San Marcos, New Braunfels, and San Antonio. They visited the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University, the New Braunfels Buc-ee’s store, and the San Antonio’s River Walk.
As of February 26th, there are 124 cases of measles in Texas. Fortunately there are no reported cases of measles in Bexar County or at the University of the Incarnate Word. However, if you have any of these symptoms, please stay home from work or school.
Symptoms of measles include:
● High fever (up to 105° F)
● Cough
● Runny nose
● Red, watery eyes
● Tiny white spots that may appear inside the mouth 2-3 days after symptoms begin
● Rash (typically appears 3-5 days after initial symptoms, starting on the face and spreading downward on the body)
