AI has become one of the most popular and widely used tools globally. Its ability to provide extensive information on diverse topics and generate comprehensive reports has revolutionized how we access knowledge. However, the use of this technology has raised questions about its effectiveness and the ethical implications of its application.
Originally designed to facilitate access to information and improve efficiency in data retrieval, artificial intelligence, AI, has been used in ways that deviate from its initial objectives. In the educational realm, significant irregularities in its use have been observed, particularly among students. Jose Bowen, author of the book Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning, said, “The technology changed the standard that we accept”. In his book, he states that even when what AI offers can be good, some people are not used to these technological advances, and they change the past ideals of how standard for educations have been set.
Increasingly, students are turning to tools like ChatGPT to avoid completing their assignments themselves or even using it to cheat on exams. This trend has led to a rise in complaints for educators, who are grappling with issues related to plagiarism and academic integrity due to the automatic generation of work.
The misuse of AI not only raises concerns about academic integrity but also impacts students´ creative development and their ability to effectively search for information. Excessive reliance on these tools can limit imagination and deep learning, both crucial aspects of academic and professional development.
At UIW, numerous student papers have been found to involve AI use. This situation has led some professors to consider failing students due to the lack of originality in their submissions, preventing them from properly appreciating their creative abilities.
An anonymous survey conducted among students from various majors at UIW reveals mixed opinions on AI. The majority view it as a helpful tool for their assignments, although some admitted they have used AI to generate entire papers. Others report using it only to get ideas and not to complete their work entirely. A smaller group maintains that they avoid these tools for ethical reasons. One student said, “If we are going to use AI for our assignments instead of learning, why are we even paying for our tuition?” referring to AI as something that is not helpful at all when having a job, in which people depend on their abilities to have a good position.
In conclusion, AI is an extremely valuable tool when used appropriately. The challenge lies in the misinformation and misuse that some students engage in. Promoting greater awareness and education on the ethical and effective use if AI could enhance its benefits for society, students, and future generations.
