The University of the Incarnate Word men’s baseball team is eager to maintain their winning momentum as they prepare to start the new season.
Last year, the team earned a place in the Southland Conference but unfortunately fell short against Lamar University in the playoffs, which ended their promising season. The Cardinals have lost important members of their rotation, as both Isaiah Zavala and Cameron Caley have graduated. However, the team still has great potential this season.
The team is led by standout players like infielder Ryan Scott, who was recognized as the Southland Hitter of the Week with 4 home runs and 15 RBI.
Even players like graduate student Ryan Schlotzhauer, a left handed pitcher, have been a crucial part of the winning formula. He shared his perspective on the upcoming season, stating, “The team’s primary goal is to win the Southland Conference Championship and earn a spot in a regional.” When asked about what inspired him to pursue baseball, he mentioned, “Watching the College World Series as a kid on TV was something that always inspired me and pushed me to work harder to one day be on the same stage as the athletes I grew up watching on TV”.
The Cardinals have started their season strong, currently holding a record of 3-1 after competing against Saint Peter’s University. For more information about the team, you can visit the UIW athletics page. https://uiwcardinals.com/index.aspx
